Who can become a sperm donor?

Individuals from all walks of life are welcome to become a sperm donor, as long as they meet the following criteria:

• Aged 18-45 (21-45 in Victoria)
• Healthy with no history of genetic disease. Donors will not be accepted if they suffer from an illness, disease or inherited condition that can be passed on to a child conceived from their donation
• Low risk for sexually transmitted diseases and HIV/AIDS
• Able to provide a family medical history
• If married or in a de facto relationship, the partner must consent to the donation
• Clinic-recruited donors must have a permanent address and be contactable for follow-up tests. They must be able to provide three identifiers and proof of permanent address (driver’s licence, photo ID and passport.)
• A lifestyle declaration must be signed
• Clinic-recruited sperm donors with student, working holiday or temporary working visas will not be accepted to the program. Donors with temporary resident visas may be accepted to the program if they meet the above requirements.

Quarantine period for clinic-recruited sperm

A six-month quarantine period is required for all clinic-recruited sperm. At the end of the quarantine period, all donors are rechecked for the following:

Treatment options when using donor sperm

There are two treatment options available when using door sperm. Click on the treatment type below for further information:

• Donor Insemination

The process of receiving donated sperm

• Medical Consultation – You (and your partner, if applicable) will be required to attend an appointment, in which you will be informed about the process and procedures involved. Your medical details will also be assessed during this appointment.
• Pathology Collection – As part of the mandatory screening process you (and your partner, if applicable) will be required to undergo blood and urine tests prior to treatment.
• Counselling – It is a legal requirement that you (and your partner, if applicable) attend counselling sessions. This will give you a chance to fully understand and consider all aspects of the donor program. A cooling off period of minimum 14 days is granted, prior to commencing treatment.
• Patient Education – Before commencing treatment, you will undertake a self-directed patient education session. This will provide you with detailed insights into medications and the side effects and day-today requirements. You will also be provided with consent forms, which you will need to complete, sign and return before beginning treatment.
• Final review – A final review of the counselling reports, blood tests and consent forms will be carried out before treatment can begin.
• Commence Treatment – It is strongly recommended that you follow a healthy diet and lifestyle before and during your treatment.
